Ohrid, Skoplje

Macedonian Sea, the cradle of Orthodox spirituality in the Balkans… Ohrid. The city, surrounded by high mountains, at 700 meters above sea level, is located on the shores of Lake Ohrid, one of the oldest, largest and deepest lakes in Europe. Ohrid is a city with 43,000 inhabitants. The biggest attraction, next to the lake, is certainly Samuil's Fortress, which survived numerous conquerors, from the Byzantines to the Turks. The capital and largest city of Northern Macedonia, Skopje, where you will be greeted by recognizable Southern hospitality, abounds in a rich history and cultural heritage. Skopje lies on the river Vardar and has about 500,000 inhabitants. The most famous historical monument in Skopje is the Kale Fortress, built in the 4th century. One of the most significant buildings in Skopje is the National Art Gallery Daut Pasa, which dates from the 15th century. Also, it is worth mentioning the Stone, or Dušan's Bridge, which connects the old and the new part of the city across the Vardar, built in the 15th century. Skopje is the birthplace of Mother Teresa. At the place where the Catholic Church of the Sacred Heart of Jesus used to be, a memorial house of Mother Teresa was built, and special care was taken to make it look identical to her birthplace. Porta Makedonija is a replica of the Triumphal Arch in Paris. When you pass through it, you come to the central town square, which is dominated by the monument to Alexander the Great.
